The Galena Hawks wrestling season is over and it’s come down to two students competing at the state tournament in Anchorage.

The tournament is today and Saturday in the Alaska Airlines Center. Matches begin at 9 a.m. both days.

The students are Amos Charlie of Scammon Bay in the 135-pound weight class and Deshawn Sakar of Anchorage in the 285-pound weight class. Josh Pittsenbarger is the coach for the Galena Hawks wrestling team.

Coach Pittsenbarger stayed in Anchorage this week following regionals last weekend. He’s been preparing the athletes for state. “We’re trying to eat good food, doing light exercises, and keeping up with the school work,” he said.  “I’d say it was a good season, good experience for the young wrestlers and how they worked with each other as the season went on.”

Bradley Fitka (135 weight class) was the most improved wrestler and got the sportsmanship award at the regional tournament, he said. “All got better and better as a team as the season went on,” Mr. Pittsenbarger said.

“All the kids that are planning to join the team next season (2019-20) should be changing their diet and preparing themselves for the season which starts in late September,” said coach Pittsenbarger
