The Galena Hawks NYO team is in Anchorage at the state tournament in the Alaska Airlines Center at the UAA campus Thursday to Saturday, April 25-27.

There are five athletes returning this year, said Dawn Pomrening, NYO coach.

  • Donovan Arkanakyak is competing in Alaska High Kick.
  • Nelson Jackson, one-foot high kick.
  • Amos Charlie, seal hop.
  • Klaydon Charlie, two-foot high kick and wrist carry.
  • Timothy Bell, Indian stick pull.

There are four new athletes, said coach Pomrening.

  • Koby Wightman, a graduating senior, is competing in stick pull.
  • Abraham Bjorklund, scissor broad jump.
  • Erica Isaac, Alaska high kick, scissor broad jump, and Indian stick pull.
  • Aiden Charlie, kneel jump.

Coach Pomrening trained the students for the first few weeks with conditioning exercises, yoga, stretches, work-out stations, and weightlifting.

The students paid for the trip by fundraising and assistance from the school.
