Good defense by the Valdez Lady Buccaneers led the visiting team to win against the Galena Lady Hawks at home in the Sidney C. Huntington School gym on Friday night (Jan. 23), with a score of 36-55.

“The girls worked very hard,” said Lady Hawks coach Beth Buchanan. “I’m really happy with their work effort.”
The Galena girls kept the game even by the end of the first quarter 10-12, but the Valdez girls eventually went ahead to win the game.

During the first quarter, Valdez junior Madison Fleming made the first point with a lay-up, with Galena Lady Hawk senior Sarah Buchanan following with a three pointer.

At the end of the first quarter, the score was 10-12 in favor of the Lady Buccaneers.

The second quarter started with Valdez junior Sidney Hersh going for a layup, but the Lady Hawk’s Romay Harris blocked her, but Hersh stole the ball again, which was blocked by senior Sarah Buchanan. Steals and slaps filled the second quarter, which ended with 12-19 with the Lady Buccaneers ahead.

The top scorer for Valdez was Makenzie Mott with 19 points. Top scorers for the Galena Lady Hawks were Romay Harris, 15 points, Sarah Buchanan, 8 points, and Courtney Carlo with 7 points.
