Galena social studies teacher Tim Lorenzini wants to help sponsor students on a trip to Washington, D.C., for the Close Up program at the end of April 2015.

Eight students showed up at a recent meeting to look at interest in the program. Students would have to pay $2,500 in order to attend the program, he said.

The Close-Up program is dedicated to helping students learn more about government, according to the Close-Up website.

Mr. Lorenzini said that they are in an exploratory phase, and nothing is certain. A few ways that the students participating would obtain the amount needed to attend the program is to ask their families and communities, or even their native tribal councils to make the money available.

The program goes from April 29 to May 2, 2015. Mr. Lorenzini said the Close-Up students would attend workshops, classes, and take tours around the capital, including places like the Library of Congress.

The program was founded in 1971. It is dedicated to the need for students to learn more about their government. Nearly 800,000 students and educators have graduated from their experiential programs, according to the Close-Up website.
