Galena’s Native Youth Olympics team arrived in Anchorage this weekend (April 17-18) with high hopes, and they weren’t disappointed.

The team finished the competition at the Alaska Airlines Center with three medals in the One-Foot High Kick, Seal Hop, and the One-Hand Reach.

Derrick Black, a senior from Napakiak, bettered his performance in last year’s NYO Seal-Hop competition by increasing his distance by 10 feet. His distance this year in the Seal Hop was 162 feet, 7 and one-half inches. He came in second.

Derrick also competed in the Toe Kick, placing fourth with a kick of 78 inches.

John Angaiak, a senior from Tununak, placed fifth in the One-Hand Reach with a reach of 62 inches.

The coaches for the NYO team are Joel and Ineke Wilkinson.
