Two Galena athletes have returned from the Arctic Winter Games in Greenland with gold, silver and bronze medals.
Carolyn Sam, a senior from Galena, earned two gold medals in the 4-kilometer mass start biathlon and the 5-kilometer individual start biathlon, according to the Arctic Winter Games website. She also got a silver medal in the 3-kilometer snowshoe biathlon sprint.
Jacob Moos, a sophomore from Galena, was awarded two silver medals in the 4-kilometer mass start biathlon and the 5-kilometer individual biathlon. He also got a bronze in the 3-kilometer snowshoe sprint.
“It was just a cool experience. I’d definitely go again,” said Jacob.
Both students took a charter flight directly from Anchorage to Nuuk, Greenland. They were snowed in at Kangerlussuaq for a day before making it to the games in the capital of Greenland.
“Most of the days it was windy,” he said, describing the landscape as treeless with lots of “rocks and snow.”
He and Carolyn stayed in a school. Jacob said he ate “musk ox and a lot of fish.”
“Most of the people couldn’t speak English… they were very friendly.”
The athletes also won bronze medals in the relay races, but we don’t have those results.
Team Alaska came in first at the games with 216 points. Yukon was second with 100 points. Other teams were Alberta North, Northwest Territories, Greenland, Nunavut, Nunavik Quebec, Sampi, and Yamal.
